Headlines like 'Endulkar" hurt deeply. After eighteen years in international cricket, it was tough to see things come to this and retirement crossed my mind.
By Sachin Tendulkar in his autobiography Playing it my way
This headline popped up in the news after India lost the 2007 World Cup.
As a Tendulkar fan, I was deeply hurt by this. Having scored 1000 runs in the same calendar year, no batsman has to go through this.
But the thing is, whenever you are at the top of your field, it gets lonely and all people who look at you want to do is to pull you down from there.
Needless to say, Tendulkar played for 6 more years after that and was mostly on top until the day he retired.
More than anything, it’s the endurance and longevity that have put him as the greatest cricketer of all time.
Similarly, whenever you want to build a business, it is a must to keep in mind that you should make it sustainable and it should withstand Father Time.
Short-term satisfaction is cool, but playing the long game is what matters.
