“We’re taught to work foolishly hard for a non-living entity, donating our most precious commodity—our time—for a paycheck.”
By Joshua Fields Millburn in his book Everything That Remains: A Memoir by The Minimalists
What does this quote actually mean?
Does it mean to say that working for money is a stupid thing and we should give it up all together?
No, because that itself would be a stupid thing to say.
At the end of the day, the world is run by money, for money and with money.
What it actually means is that money may hold the power to run your life, but life doesn’t need to revolve around it.
Earning money to live a simple life and earning money to constantly fill a certain void with material possessions are two different things.
Putting in your time and effort to keep on increasing your bank balance is the same thing as eating till you’re way past the point of being full.
Do you need it to survive and live a life of contentment?
Not at all.
So the next time you find yourself at a crossroad, ask yourself “Do i need this to survive?”
