“We need to learn how to want what we have NOT to have what we want in order to get steady and stable Happiness”
By Dalai Lama XIV in his book The Art of Happiness
Imagine two friends, Sarah and Emily.
Both work in similar jobs and earn comparable salaries.
Sarah is always striving for more—whether it's a higher salary, a bigger house, or the latest gadgets. She constantly feels she needs these things to be happy.
When she gets a promotion, she feels joy briefly, but soon she starts longing for the next big thing, never fully content with what she has.
Emily, on the other hand, practices gratitude and focuses on appreciating her current situation. She finds joy in small daily pleasures, like a walk in the park, a good book, or time spent with loved ones.
She is content with her home and values her relationships and health. Even when challenges arise, she maintains a sense of inner peace because her happiness isn’t tied to acquiring more.
Sarah's happiness is fleeting and unstable because it depends on external achievements and possessions, which are always changing. Emily’s happiness is steady and stable because it comes from within—she has learned to want what she already has.
By shifting our focus to gratitude and the present moment, we can break the cycle of temporary satisfaction that comes from material gains.
